The next time you find yourself boarding a plane, snap a few shots. Here are some things to
keep in mind:
?– Hopefully this goes without saying, but turn off your camera??™s flash??”if the flash fires, it
will reflect off the window and ruin your shot. Unless you own a flash powerful enough
to illuminate the ground 10,000 feet below you, there??™s no reason to use one. Rely on the
natural lighting outside the plane.
?– If you??™re on a sightseeing trip, let the crew know you have a camera and would like
a seat that is closer to one of the large windows. That??™s not always possible??”in a
helicopter, for example, they often arrange passengers by weight??”but it doesn??™t hurt
to ask.
152 How to Do Everything: Digital Camera
?– If you??™re on a sightseeing flight, ask the pilot before you take off if you can open any
of the windows. Sometimes regulations prohibit to open windows, but getting rid of the
glass can dramatically improve your shots.
?– If you??™re stuck shooting through glass, ask if you can clean the windows beforehand.
Once, I was positioned in front of an especially dirty window. When I mentioned that
I had a camera and asked if I could clean the window, an aircrew member was dispatched
to do it for me.
?– If any of the windows are actually open, you??™ll have a lot of cold wind.
