These days, though, Windows let you use JPG images for wallpaper??”relegating the BMP
format to the ???where are they now??? file for most users.
?– GIF Short for Graphics Interchange Format (pronounced either ???giff??? or ???jiff,??? depending
on who is doing the talking), this format was originally developed by the online service
CompuServe and is semicommonly used on the Web, along with the more-popular JPG
format. Because you can make the background of GIF images transparent, they??™re handy
for displaying graphics (like line art and some kinds of computer-generated images), but
JPG files display photos more efficiently. Like BMP, there??™s little reason to mess with
GIF anymore.
?– HD Photo The very newest file format on the block is Microsoft??™s HD Photo, which
has all sorts of features that make it a promising future alternative to existing formats like
JPG and RAW. HD Photo supports a broader color range than JPG, which means it has
the potential to capture and store a far greater dynamic range than existing cameras. (To
see why this is so important, check out the High Dynamic Range section in Chapter 15.) It
also offers better compression quality than JPG (as well as a lossless compression mode),
and HD Photo images can be mind-blowingly immense: up to 262 million pixels on an
edge, or 68.
