Windows may not be configured to show you the complete filename including the
extension. To turn on the extension view in Windows, follow these steps:
1. Open a folder on the Windows desktop.
2. If you are using Windows XP, choose Tools | Folder Options from the folder??™s menu.
If you are using Windows Vista, choose Organize | Folder and Search Options.
3. Click the View tab so that you can see the Advanced settings in the bottom half of
the window.
4. Find the entry Hide Extensions For Known File Types (it??™s about halfway down the
list), and remove the check mark from this selection.
5. Click OK to save this change.

Now that you understand file formats, you are probably wondering which one you should use on
your own system. As in all things, it depends on how you??™re going to use your images. Let??™s look
at your choices, and I??™ll make a few recommendations about how you might want to work with
