"How to Do Everything: Digital Camera 5 edition"

The principal
difference is data encryption: SD cards enable vendors to deliver copyrighted data to the end user
while ensuring it can??™t be illegally copied.
Here??™s the important part: SD cards, thanks to their small size and reasonable price, are pretty
much the standard storage card today in point-and-shoot cameras, as well as in other kinds of
devices like PDAs and some cell phones.
CHAPTER 11: Working with Digital Film 221
xD
When it became clear that the now ancient SmartMedia card was ready for the Old Memory Card
Home, Olympus and Fuji collaborated on a new memory card format, which they dubbed xD.
The xD card is SmartMedia??™s more modern successor, and it appears in several Olympus and
FujiFilm cameras, with a maximum capacity of about 8GB. xD competes with the Memory Stick
Micro for the prize for the smallest memory card format on the market, which means it can be
used to power some very tiny cameras.
Memory Card Glitches
Occasionally, memory cards sometimes seem to ???die.??? If it stops working, what??™s the real
problem?
First, remember that some memory cards are pretty delicate. SmartMedia cards, for
example, are wafer-thin and have important electrical contacts exposed right on the surface.
If you??™ve damaged a card, which isn??™t altogether out of the question, it??™s now a really, really
small coaster.
