4. Outline the target with the flashlight, again pointing it at the camera.
5. If you want to make the target look like he or she is disintegrating, ask the subject to
leave the scene, and then flash the rear wall once.
6. Stop the exposure.
That??™s a lot of work, and the results are often hit or miss. Against all odds, you can
sometimes get a half-decent one, as in the illustration below.
CHAPTER 15: Create Special Effects 317
The Disintegrating Subject
With a program like Photoshop Elements, you can create this special effect a lot more efficiently.
Here??™s an alternate way to create a similar image:
1. Take a picture of two kids posed, ready to have some special effects magic done to them.
Star Trek clothing is optional.
2. Open the image in Photoshop Elements and immediately choose Layer | Duplicate Layer
to make a second copy of the image in a new layer. Click OK.
3. In the Layer Palette on the right side of the screen, turn the top layer off so you can see
the result of your work as you make changes to the bottom layer. To do that, click the eye
to the left of the top layer. Then click the bottom layer to select it.
4. As a first step toward making the target glow in the bottom layer, carefully create a
selection region around the subject.
