Just sign up for an account at an online stock photo agency, upload some photos, and wait
expectantly.
There are a number of stock photo agencies on the Web. Two of the best such agencies that
I have found are istockphoto.com and shutterstock.com.
Both sites pay photographers for their sales, but these two sites have very different pay
structures. Istockphoto.com, for example, offers royalty rates of 20 percent for most photos, on
sales that range from a buck to $40, depending upon print size. Shutterstock, in contrast, pays
$.25 per sale. That doesn??™t sound like much (and let??™s be honest: it??™s not), but Shutterstock boasts
that at 2000 downloads per month, you can rack up $500/month. In real life, you??™ll probably
see a fraction of that unless you have a lot of really great photos and can consistently upload
new stuff to freshen up your portfolio. A friend of mine claims to have made $300 in the last
three months, or about $100/month. Not bad, when you consider the fact that he doesn??™t think of
himself as a professional photographer.
Keep in mind that selling photos for stock photography is not necessarily something that??™s easy
to do, even if you are an all-around good, serious photographer. Stock agencies look for certain
things in a photo that you might not be used to providing, like extremely low digital noise and razor
sharp images.
