Fawcett and
Magnan (2002) describe the ideal of supply chain management as managing from
???the suppliers??™ supplier to the customers??™ customers??? (p. 340), with Nurmilaakso,
Kettunen, and Seilonen (2002) summing up SCM as being about integration.
Members of any supply chain regularly exchange communication to coordinate
business activities (S??nchez & P?©rez, 2003) as SCM is an organisational boundary
crossing activity (Fawcett & Magnan, 2002). This need for a flow of information
across organisational boundaries has made agreement between trading partners on
the meaning of exchanged information and interoperability of their information
systems important (Dow, 2001; Hasselbring & Welgand, 2001). EDI has been a
traditional tool for facilitating the information flow. Internet technologies have had
an impact on B2B communication enabling the collaboration process (Pease, 2001)
and solving some problems in tools such as EDI.
