Lawrence Philips??™ methods
superceded Soundex (developed by Robert Russell and Margaret Odell and was
patented in 1918 and 1922) (http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?patentnumb
er=1,262,167). Lawrence Philip??™s Metaphone combines the metaphone algorithm
based on phonology and Aspell??™s open source. Aspell??™s open source spell checker
is an advanced version of Ispell??™s which uses the basic strategy of inserting a space
or hyphen, one letter deletion, one letter addition, and interchanging two adjacent
letters when used for a correct term. It is an open source and it is free requiring only
a little effort to download it.
